The slender, beautiful rowan tree grows in our forests. It attracts attention at any time of the year.
In autumn, the mountain ash turns into a real beauty! The lacy-lace leaves first lighten, then become yellow-orange and red. Bright juicy clusters of ripe rowan berries blaze among them. And the rowan stands elegantly, like a girl in a colorful sundress with a ruby necklace around her neck.
With the arrival of winter, the fashionista does not lose her beauty. It covers the flexible thin branches with lush snow caps, from under which scarlet earrings of berries peek out.
In spring, emerald patterned lace leaves begin to bloom on the thin-trunked tree. Then small white flowers appear from the buds, collected in large fluffy caps. Their spicy-tart aroma can be felt from afar.
In summer, rowan berries gain strength, at first the light green peas slowly turn yellow, then turn light orange.
No one passes by the beauty indifferently. Children make beads from crimson berries. Housewives make delicious jam. Birds in cold winters are saved from hunger by nutritious fruits.
For a long time, people admired her beauty, called her curly, dedicated poems to her and sang in songs. Rowan deserves love and respect!

Rowan: description for children
Probably many people like this time of year like autumn. The leaves turn yellow, slowly fall off and cover the ground. The most beautiful thing at this time of year is the rowan tree. It grows in different parts of the country and can delight everyone with its beauty. Bright red clusters of berries hang on its branches, which not only shimmer in the sun, but are also very clearly visible from afar. It’s just that this beauty won’t last long, that’s all, because people pick them and birds feed on them.
Previously, almost every house had bunches of rowan berries. People believed that they could protect not only from the evil eye, but also from damage. It also helps preserve the family hearth.
In autumn, rowan leaves gradually turn purple, and sometimes can resemble a bright fire. Some trees bear beautiful red berries even in winter.
Many artists and poets admire the beauty of the mountain ash and sing it in their works. In addition, a huge number of songs and poems have been written on this topic.
With the first frost, the leaves fall off the rowan tree, but the berries remain in place. These berries will be useful in winter for hungry birds that have not flown to warmer climes. And it’s not at all scary if there is snow on the berries. The berries will not suffer from this, but on the contrary, they will become a little more beautiful than before.
In addition, rowan will be healthy and tasty for people. First you need to wait for frost to set in, and only then collect the rowan berries. Usually in autumn the berries are still bitter and not so pleasant to eat, and it is best to pick them after the first frost. And then they can be used to make jam. Each berry contains a huge amount of vitamins that are needed in the autumn.
Like a beautiful maiden, a rowan tree stands in the autumn forest among dark spruce trees and white-trunked birches. She threw a shawl embroidered with carved golden-red leaves over her shoulders and put on a necklace of scarlet berries.
Rowan is often grown as an ornamental tree, but can also be used as food. Fresh rowan fruits have a bitter taste, but after the first frost the bitterness disappears.
What can you cook from rowan?
Rowan fruits are consumed fresh, in the form of preserves, jams, jelly, as well as soaked and pickled.
Animals and birds love rowan. The bear wanders through the thickets of the forest, collecting mushrooms, berries, acorns - fattening up for the winter. If he finds a rowan tree in the forest, strewn with clusters of berries, he will deftly tilt the flexible tree and enjoy its fruits with pleasure.
The forest giants, moose, also like rowan berries. They, reaching to the very top of the tree, eat its fruits and branches with appetite, and the berries that have fallen to the ground are then picked up by voles, hedgehogs and squirrels.
Listen to the poem.
There are long braids on her shoulders,
The eyebrows are bold and sable.
Sundress with a wide border,
Colored half shawl with fringe.
Embroidered with golden leaves,
Painted with scarlet brushes.
I come up and can’t believe my eyes:
That is not a young girl standing there,
And the rowan is a thin tree!

In autumn and right up to frost, the fiery clusters of rowan burn like beacons, warming the eyes and instilling hope in the hearts of people. Rowan has long been a talisman and a symbol of family happiness - until recently it was placed between window frames for the winter and collected into beads. Forest dwellers love to eat these red berries, but they are also good for humans.
Rowan is unpretentious, distributed throughout the world and can grow almost anywhere: in the undergrowth of coniferous and mixed forests, along forest edges, and is often grown as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens. In our country, it is widespread in forest and forest-steppe zones, in the Urals, and in the mountain-forest belt of the Caucasus. As a northern crop, rowan tolerates temperatures as low as -50 °C and therefore grows even in areas close to the Far North.
If you ask what types of rowan you know, most people will name only two: ordinary red rowan and chokeberry. But in general, there are about 100 species of this plant in nature, and more than 30 of them grow in the territory of the former USSR. Eg:
In the south of the country, Crimean large-fruited or domestic rowan is grown. Its sweet round or pear-shaped fruits contain 14% sugars, reach a diameter of 3.5 cm, that is, 7 times larger than usual, and weigh 20 grams. They have good taste and attractive appearance. This variety is middle lane Russia requires shelter for the winter.
And the so-called “chokeberry” is not a rowan at all, although it is from the same family. This is bred by I.V. Michurin. at the end of the 19th century, a special variety of chokeberry with a different set of chromosomes.
Rowan lives up to two hundred years. The height of the trees can reach 15 meters. Begins to bear fruit at the age of 5-6 years. Plants older than 30-35 years bear maximum fruit. The tree produces a good harvest once every 2-3 years. At the same time, from one large rowan you can harvest up to 100 kg of berries.
Its flowers are collected in white tassels. During the flowering period, May-June, rowan exudes a specific, strong-smelling aroma that attracts bees. Therefore, rowan is a good honey plant.
The fruits that appear on the trees after flowering look like small apples. The fruits ripen in September-October and have a bitter taste. But the first frosts lead to the destruction of the bitter glycoside sorbic acid, and the bitterness disappears.
About the name
The Latin name for rowan is Sorbus aucuparia, from the Celtic word "sor" - "tart", and from the Latin aucupari, which means "to catch birds" ("bird catcher"). This is probably due to the fact that rowan attracts birds who love to feast on its fruits.
Through the thin ice of the window glass,
Among the crooked mirrors of shop windows and lanterns
One appears, graceful and familiar,
Rowan is a beacon and the pulse of autumn days.
It grows stubbornly upward, and it’s hard to believe
What's the opposite of smiles and hopes?
That the city was burning with frost, and the wind was sending sadness -
The fragile leaf is transparent, and the berry taste is fresh.
And maybe more than once she will remember how a blizzard
Wandered at night, bending to the ground,
And in the rustle of branches - the warmth of a friend’s embrace,
And the sincere motive is akin to my soul.
The rain will open its eyelids and run along the buildings,
Dropping hundreds of arrows in a dank veil -
A stormy day is warmed by rowan tree breath,
And a scarlet beacon is burning in my window...
